I think you're off by a few years. The best "Eyes" are to be found in '73-'74 with emphasis on '74.

Hate to keep beating this horse, but do yourself a favor and check out the EYES from 10-29-77 (yeah, it's my favorite show and I also think it has the best Jack Straw & SugarMags ever and possibly the best St. Stephen, but of course it's all subjective)...

The 73-74 EYES certainly are wonderful due to the extended Stronger-than-Dirt jams but the 10-29-77 EYES is a perfect example of the relaxed, flowing, yey super-hot jamming Jerry brought to this excellent tune.

I'll be checking out those other '77's listed here hoping for more of the same!

I have three that come to mind.....My all time favorite has always been 8-13-75.....I just like the groove and Jerry's solo is so great but 3-19-77 (the stand still start is unique to this version) and (sorry "bonk" but it's) 6-23-90 at Eugene....a set opener to a phenominal set.

9.11.74 and 9.20.74 both offer very dreamy intros, 9.11 out of Seastones and 9.20 out of Truckin'. 10.20.74 is also great, with more than a tinge of melancholy as the "retirement" show (thank god they played a few after that!). 9.18.74 is also sweet, but come to think of it, I have not heard a bad Eyes from 73 or 74.

Also of note is 5.5.81 as an example of an interesting intro Jerry used to play. Hard to put into words, it was an early 80's thing that showed up on occasion.

in which late 80s? show did Jerry sing the line as "wake up to find out that you are the Size of the world"? (or was it Sighs?)
I can't remember, so I'll have to listen to them all...

I'll agree that the 73-74 versions are by far my favorite. I always enjoyed the 80's up tempo offerings when I was seeing the boys, but after discovering the jazzy pre-retirement takes on the song I now can't stand the later versions. Too fast.

i've always been partial to the first one, 2/9/73. sounded like they'd been playin' it for years...and right into a sweet china doll, which was also a first.

people must have been blown f'in away...

All really good suggestions people. I won't dilute the thread with more but I did have a quick 'stupid' question concerning EoW. Originally, the Dead would get into that funky, mixed tempo jazzy jam at the end of Eyes. Is that jam called anything in particular?
Thanks.

That jam was latter refered to as 'Stronger Than Dirt' after it appeared as such on Blues for Allah album. That segment and how the band would shift gears into another key and continue to jam is why I prefer the 73-74 versions. Also the frequent pairing with China Doll was like a nice cool down lap after a brisk run.
